Jack Leaning’s Grit Keeps Sussex Hopes Alive vs Warwickshire

Jack Leaning Anchors Sussex in Intense Battle with Warwickshire

In a gripping encounter at Hove, Sussex are fighting for a victory that would mark their second consecutive win in the Rothesay County Championship. Thanks to a composed and unbeaten 72 from Jack Leaning, Sussex have clawed their way back into the match, leaving them needing 94 more runs to secure a win over Warwickshire.

A Critical Partnership

The match has been seen as a grueling test of nerves, with Warwickshire’s bowling attack proving persistent. Leaning, a former Kent and Yorkshire player who joined Sussex during the winter, demonstrated his resolve by defying the attack for three hours on day three.

The momentum shifted when Sussex found themselves in a precarious position at 68 for 3. It was then that Leaning and opener Daniel Hughes formed a critical fourth-wicket partnership of 108 runs, effectively reviving the side’s fortunes.

The Struggle for Control

Hughes, the Australian opener, was rock solid in his defense and punished any loose deliveries, eventually falling for a hard-fought 83. His contribution was his first mistake of the innings, playing on to a delivery from Jordan Thompson.

Following Hughes’ departure, the pressure mounted as Michael Booth angled a delivery into John Simpson’s pads, straightening it to dismiss him and leave Sussex at 184 for 5. Despite the setbacks, Leaning remained the anchor, posting his first half-century for his new county and adding 50 runs for the sixth wicket with Tom Price.

Warwickshire’s Early Dominance

Warwickshire’s early burst was led by Ethan Bamber, whose new-ball spell caused significant damage. Tom Haines edged low to second slip, Tom Clark was caught at gully, and James Coles was trapped leg before by Michael Booth. At that point, Warwickshire appeared to be cruising toward a three-day finish.

Warwickshire’s Tail-End Resistance

Earlier in the match, Sussex had hoped to restrict Warwickshire’s lead to under 300. While they managed to take three wickets in a quick succession of 23 balls in the first hour, they were frustrated by a stubborn ninth-wicket partnership between Michael Booth and Jordan Thompson.

The pair put on 64 runs, a stand that could potentially prove decisive. Booth, playing aggressively, hit eight fours and a massive six that reached the top tier of the pavilion, falling just two runs short of a half-century on 48.

The Key Wickets

Fynn Hudson-Prentice claimed four wickets, while Ollie Robinson finished with 3 for 48. Robinson was instrumental in ending an 84-run partnership between Rob Yates and Kai Smith, eventually removing Chris Woakes with a ball that held its line to hit the off stump.

The most crucial breakthrough came from Tom Price, who dismissed Rob Yates for 90. Yates, who had been patient for over four hours, finally made a loose drive to short midwicket. His 90 is currently the top score of the match, but with Leaning’s grit, Sussex Sussex’s hopes remain very much alive.
