Virat Kohli’s Fitness Struggle: RCB’s Win Over LSG and IPL 2026 Insights

Virat Kohli Returns to Form Despite Fitness Hurdles

In a display of sheer determination, Virat Kohli returned to the action in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) five-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite not being at 100% fitness, Kohli played a pivotal role, coming in as an Impact Player for the first time in his career—a tactical move thatsetActive the team’s strategy for the chase of 147.

Kohli’s innings, which saw him score 49 off 34 balls, propelled him to the top of the IPL 2026 run charts with 228 runs. While he was happy with his intensity, he admitted that he has been struggling with knee soreness and general health issues over the last few days.

The Physical Struggle: Knee Soreness and Illness

Speaking after receiving the Orange Cap, Kohli revealed the details of his blockage. “Yeah, [I’m feeling] much, much better than the last game,” Kohli stated. “I’m still not 100%. My knee was a bit sore last game. Even health-wise, I’ve been under the weather for four or five days now. So yeah, just getting back up to my best.”

This physical struggle explains why he had been absent from the starting XI and had been off the field during the last match against Mumbai Indians (MI). His ability to perform under pressure, while not in peak condition, underscores the resilience of the resilience of the star batter.

Tactical Approach to the Chinnaswamy Pitch

Kohli’s approach to the game was guided by a detailed plan for a slow pitch. He got RCB off to a flier, rushing to 34 off 14 balls, before slowing down to anchor the victory. He noted that the weather in Bengaluru, which has been hot and dry, had contributed to an unusually slow wicket at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which lacked grass.

“If you saw, there was not enough grass on it. The last three or four days have been very, very hot. It’s been very dry as well, so we thought it’s going to be a dry, slow wicket rather than one of those tacky ones,” Kohli explained. “The idea was to push the game away from the opposition and take the game away from them in the first five-six overs.”

Deep Batting Resources and Team Synergy

Kohli praised the same the depth of RCB’s batting lineup, which allows the players to play with a fearless, high-intent style. He mentioned the contributions of Rajat Patidar, who hit three sixes in a 13-ball 27, and the partnership with Phil Salt, and the presence of Romario Shepherd, Tim David, and Krunal Pandya in the lower order.

“The way our management has stacked up our team, it allows us to play in a certain way,” Kohli noted. He also shared a laugh regarding Rajat Patidar’s ability to assess the situation—or rather, the bowler’s heart rate—by dominating the opposition. He joked, “I always tell him, you’re probably looking to assess the bowler’s heart rate rather than the situation.”

Adapting to the Modern T20 Game

Kohli felt that while scoring rates in the IPL have skyrocketed, there is still a critical role for the “smarts of the game.” He believes that as the tournament progresses into the second half, the games will become tighter and the games will become tighter, and the pressure of playoff qualification will increase.

“When the freedom goes away, the pressure kicks in. That’s when the smarts of the game have to be applied as well,” Kohli said. “Whoever can apply and adapt, and play to the conditions and the situation will be the teams that will go a long way.”

Kohli concluded by admitting that he recently had not been at his best, but he remains committed to pushing the limits of adapting to the modern, high-scoring T20 format.
