Van Niekerk and Kapp Miss South Africa Women’s T20Is vs India

Major Absences in South African Squad

South Africa Women’s national team has announced its squad for the home T20I series against India, and the headlines are dominated by the absence of two of their most influential players. Former captain Dane van Niekerk and the world-class all-rounder Marizanne Kapp will both miss the series, citing health and injury concerns.

Van Niekerk, who reversed her international retirement last year, has struggled with a calf injury that previously ruled her out of the New Zealand series. Her lack of match fitness is a concern for the T20 World Cup, which begins on June 12, as she has played only five T20Is since her return, none of which have been away from home. Despite this the 91-cap veteran remains a critical asset, and it is expected that she will be considered for selection if she returns to full fitness before the tournament.

Similarly, Marizanne Kapp, an automatic pick for any South African side, has been omitted from the squad as she recovers from illness. Having missed the New Zealand series as well, Kapp has not played for the national side since February, when she faced Pakistan at home. The loss of these two all-rounders creates a significant void in both the batting and batting-allrounder capacity of the team.

Injury Woes and New Opportunities

The squad selection has been further impacted by injuries. Teenage wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso has been ruled out with a wrist injury, which has opened the door for uncapped keeper Tebogo Macheke to earn her first call-up. While Sinalo Jafta remains the first-choice keeper, Macheke’s inclusion provides much-needed depth behind the stumps.

In terms of squad reshuffles, allrounder Eliz-Mari Marx has been recalled to the national setup. Despite recently losing her national contract, Marx takes the place of experienced seamer Masabata Klaas. The rest of the bowling attack remains consistent with the team that toured New Zealand, with Ayabonga Khaka leading the pace attack and Nonkululeko Mlaba spearheading the spin department.

Rising Stars and Stability

p>Top-order batter Anneke Bosch, who stepped up during the New Zealand tour, retains her place. Joining her is the exciting allrounder Kayla Reyneke, who has quickly made a name for herself with a stunning strike rate of 168.29 across her first four T20Is, including two Player-of-the-Match awards. Reyneke’s aggressive approach to the batting is exactly what South Africa is looking for as they aim to build a depth of options for the World Cup.

Structural Changes in the Support Staff

Alongside the player squad, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced a “planned transition” within the national support staff. The board has released batting coach Baakier Abrahams, Bongani Ndaba (fielding coach), and Zane Webster (strength and conditioning coach). They are replaced by a new interim support team to lead the team through the T20 World Cup:

  • Andrew Puttick: Former ODI player and former Afghanistan batting coach, takes over as batting coach.
  • Tumi Masekela: Previously worked with the men’s national side, takes over strength and conditioning.
  • Mduduzi Mbatha: Former Northern Cape Heat coach, takes over as fielding coach.

These appointments are interim until the end of the World Cup, after which permanent positions will be made available.

Looking Ahead: The India Series and World Cup Goals

South Africa will be desperate to bounce back from a disappointing 4-1 series loss in New Zealand. As two-time T20 World Cup finalists, the pressure is mounting for the Proteas Women to achieve a breakthrough and finally lift the trophy. The five-match series against India is their final dress rehearsal before the June tournament.

“It is a quick turnaround, for sure, but a T20I series against India at home will always be special,” said head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. He expressed confidence in the team’s growth, stating, “While we have learnt a lot about ourselves as a team on the recent trip to New Zealand, we are also recently excited to get back on the field and express our eagerness to grow and improve with every game and training session.”

Series Schedule and Venue

The action kicks off this Friday, with five matches played over 11 days. The series will be hosted across three iconic South African venues:

  • Kingsmead, Durban: First two games.
  • The Wanderers, Johannesburg: Next two matches.
  • Tebogo Macheke: Final game on April 27 in Benoni.
