Victoria Edge Out NSW in Sensational One-Day Cup Thriller
Victoria Clinch Nail-Biter in Dramatic Finish at Junction Oval
In a heart-pounding encounter that went right down to the wire, Victoria secured their first One-Day Cup victory of the season, surviving a heroic late-game onslaught from New South Wales’ Charlie Stobo to win by just five runs.

With morning rain shortening the contest to 36 overs per side, the drama unfolded at Junction Oval in spectacular fashion. Victoria posted a competitive 183 for 8, anchored by captain Will Sutherland’s 46 off 44 balls and a vital 43 from Campbell Kellaway. NSW looked in command at 97 for 3 in the 21st over, but the game turned on its head when young quick Austin Anlezark and spinner Campbell Kellaway tore through the middle order.
Stobo’s Heroics Fall Just Short
Just as the result seemed destined for Victoria, Charlie Stobo ignited a breathtaking comeback. Batting at No. 8, Stobo hammered 47 from just 41 balls, including a massive 19-run surge in the penultimate over off Todd Murphy that left the crowd on the edge of their seats. With the game balanced on a knife’s edge, Stobo finally succumbed, holing out to Murphy off the bowling of seamer Sam Elliott with only four balls remaining.
The Match at a Glance
- Victoria: 183 for 8 (Sutherland 46, Kellaway 43; Stobo 3-32)
- New South Wales: 178 all out (Stobo 47; Kellaway 2-25)
- Result: Victoria won by 5 runs
“It was a cracking game in the end… obviously very happy with the result,” admitted Sam Elliott, who held his nerve in the final over. “Anyone who says they don’t get nervous is a liar. I was definitely nervous at the end there. Luckily, we’ve played a lot of cricket together now, and having that clear communication helped us get over the line.”
A Frustrating Week for NSW
For NSW captain Jack Edwards, it was a bitter pill to swallow after a difficult week. “A frustrating week—we were in the game, both games, and we let it slip,” Edwards reflected. “Charlie [Stobo] held his nerve and gave us a chance. It’s a shame he couldn’t get over the line. We need to be more ruthless if we want to be a good side.”
With this result, NSW moves to a 2-2 record in the One-Day Cup, while Victoria breathes a sigh of relief as they move to 1-3. All eyes now turn to the Sheffield Shield, where NSW looks to bounce back with the return of Test star Steve Smith for their upcoming clash against Queensland.
