A New Era for Bangladesh Domestic Cricket
The landscape of Bangladesh domestic cricket is witnessing a historic shift. Under the guidance of the newly formed ad-hoc committee led by cricket icon Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced a significant increase in match fees and monthly salaries for both men’s and women’s cricketers. This initiative, which became actionable on Tuesday, serves as the committee’s first major policy decision, addressing years of stagnation in player remuneration.
Empowering Women’s Cricket
The most striking change comes in the women’s game, where the disparity in compensation had reached alarming levels. Tamim Iqbal reportedly expressed shock upon learning that female players in one-day domestic competitions were receiving match fees as low as BDT 1,000—approximately USD 8—a figure that had only recently been adjusted to that level.
Recognizing the need for immediate rectification, the committee has implemented a robust new pay structure:
- T20 Matches: Increased to BDT 10,000 (approx. USD 80).
- 50-Over Matches: Increased to BDT 15,000 (approx. USD 120).
- First-Class Games: Increased to BDT 20,000 (approx. USD 160).
Furthermore, the monthly salary for the top 36 women in Bangladesh domestic cricket will see a significant jump from BDT 30,000 to BDT 40,000 (approx. USD 320). While Tamim admits this is not the end goal, he views it as a vital step forward. “This may not be ideal, but it is certainly an improvement, considering there are limits to how much can be increased at once,” he noted.
Revitalizing Men’s Domestic Structures
The men’s domestic circuit, which has seen little financial growth over the past three to four years, is also receiving a much-needed overhaul. Tamim Iqbal was candid about the previous state of affairs, stating that players were “highly underpaid” and that the board needed to recognize the value of their labor. “These players work hard, and cricket exists because of their efforts. At the very least, they deserve fair compensation,” he emphasized.
The updated monthly salary structure for men is as follows:
- Category A: BDT 65,000 (approx. USD 540).
- Category B: BDT 50,000 (approx. USD 415).
- Category C: BDT 40,000 (approx. USD 333).
Additionally, the prestige and reward for first-class cricket have been bolstered, with match fees rising from BDT 70,000 to BDT 100,000 (approx. USD 833). These changes are slated to become effective starting January 1, 2026.
Looking Ahead: Stability and Growth
Beyond the immediate salary adjustments, the BCB’s ad-hoc committee is actively working to resolve long-standing issues within the domestic structure. The board has formally announced the roles for the eleven committee members, who are tasked with navigating complex administrative challenges. A primary focus is resolving the ongoing stalemate between various club teams and the BCB.
The committee is prioritizing the commencement of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, aiming to have the tournament underway within the next couple of weeks. By stabilizing these institutional relationships and ensuring that players are rewarded for their dedication, the current leadership is setting a foundation for a more sustainable and professional future for cricket in Bangladesh.
As these new policies take effect, the cricketing community watches with anticipation, hopeful that these financial improvements will translate into higher performance standards and better development pathways for the next generation of Bangladesh stars.
