The Pressure Mounts for Mumbai Indians
The 2026 IPL season has proven to be a stern test for the Mumbai Indians (MI). Currently languishing in eighth place on the points table, the franchise finds itself at a crossroads after losing their last two matches. While batting totals across the league continue to climb to unprecedented heights, MI’s primary concern has been the lackluster performance of their bowling unit. With five bowlers currently operating at an economy rate of 12 or higher, the team is under immense pressure to find their rhythm as they prepare for a crucial homecoming at the Wankhede Stadium.
The Wicketless Drought: Addressing the Bumrah Factor
At the heart of the conversation is Jasprit Bumrah. Despite his status as a world-class operator, Bumrah has yet to claim a wicket in the current campaign. This anomaly has sparked debates among fans and pundits, particularly given that fellow strike bowler Trent Boult is also struggling to make an impact during the powerplay. In nine T20 games this year, including the SA20 and the ongoing IPL, Boult has managed only two powerplay wickets, conceding runs at an alarming rate of 9.62.
However, MI batting coach Kieron Pollard is quick to dampen the panic. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Pollard emphasized that modern T20 cricket has shifted the goalposts. ‘When you look at T20 cricket now, the way that it’s going, you can’t really think much about wickets,’ Pollard explained. He pointed to high-scoring encounters, such as the Punjab Kings versus Sunrisers Hyderabad clash, to illustrate that powerplay scores exceeding 100 runs are becoming a new, albeit daunting, normal.
Pollard’s Perspective on Strategy
Pollard remains unconcerned about Bumrah’s wicket-tally, highlighting that Bumrah’s economic contribution—conceding runs at just eight per over—is a vital asset. ‘He’s a world-class bowler. He has done it time and time again for India and also for Mumbai Indians. And again, when the time comes to get wickets, he’ll get wickets. If not, and he’s economical, we’ll accept that as well,’ Pollard remarked.
Addressing queries about Bumrah’s noticeably lower bowling speeds, which hovered around 130kph against the Rajasthan Royals, Pollard offered a tactical defense. ‘If the ball is going at 100 knots out of the ground, you don’t want to fight fire with fire, right? You’ve got to try something different.’ For the Mumbai camp, the focus is not on individual statistics but on the collective mindset of the squad.
Looking Ahead: The RCB Challenge
The upcoming match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede is a significant test. Historically, this venue has been a fortress for MI, though RCB shattered that narrative last year with a massive 221-run total. Bumrah has historically performed well against RCB, with 29 career wickets against them, which may provide a psychological boost for the pacer.
The supporting cast of Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and AM Ghazanfar must also step up. While Shardul Thakur remains the side’s top wicket-taker with four scalps, his economy rate of 12.88 underscores the volatility MI has faced in the middle overs. Pollard insists that the team is focused on ‘execution and understanding’ to turn the tide.
A Team Effort in a Batting-Dominant Era
As the team prepares for the clash against a power-packed RCB lineup, the message from the coaching staff is clear: consistency and composure are paramount. ‘It’s difficult for the guys. We just try to continue to encourage them. We try to work as hard as possible on execution,’ Pollard said. He acknowledged that in the current climate of the game, some bowlers will inevitably take a beating, but the goal is to manage those spells and maintain a collective average that stays within the competitive par total.
Ultimately, for Kieron Pollard, the focus remains on the unity of the squad. As they return to the Wankhede, the hope is that the extensive conversations and tactical preparations will finally bear fruit on the field. MI fans will be hoping that Pollard’s wish—that Bumrah picks up five wickets while maintaining an economy of five—becomes a reality this Sunday night.
