Will Mayank Yadav Return for LSG vs RCB? | IPL 2026 Analysis

The Return of the Speedster: Mayank Yadav’s Road to Recovery

Two years ago, the cricketing world was introduced to a phenomenon in Bengaluru. Mayank Yadav burst onto the scene with a level of hostility and searing pace that left batters stunned. With the speed gun flashing 156.7kph, he didn’t just bowl; he hurried batters, creating a genuine threat that Indian cricket had long craved. That explosive debut season paved the way for an international call-up just months later.

However, the journey following that meteoric rise has been anything but smooth. For over a year, Mayank has been sidelined by injuries and grueling rehabilitation programs. The physical toll of bowling at such extreme speeds is immense, and the process of returning to competitive cricket has been cautious and methodical. Now, as IPL 2026 unfolds, Mayank is finally ready to make his comeback.

Preparation at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium

On the eve of the clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mayank’s preparation was evident. He was seen performing spot bowling at the venue, engaging in a detailed discussion with bowling coach B Arun. His short, sharp spell of bowling showed he had regained his trademark pace, followed by a light workout consisting of stretches and mobility drills to ensure his body was fully prepared for the match.

The ‘Match-Readiness’ Debate

Tom Moody, the franchise’s global director of cricket, has clarified the reasons behind Mayank’s absence during the opening weeks of the season. According to Moody, the issue was never about basic fitness, but rather “match-readiness.”

“Mayank is ready to go,” Moody stated on Tuesday. “He didn’t come into our thinking early in the tournament because he was still a little underdone. Not from a fitness point of view – his fitness was good – but in terms of bowling loads and feeling comfortable at the crease. We feel he is now at that point.”

Moody also admitted that Mayank’s availability creates a “selection headache” for the coaching staff. While the bowling unit has been solid, the team has struggled to post competitive totals, placing immense pressure on the batting lineup.

Selection Tensions: Mayank vs. Avesh Khan

If Mayank is integrated into the playing XI, it could potentially come at the expense of Avesh Khan. Avesh, also returning from injury, had a stint with Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 to build his workload. Despite a challenging start to the season, conceding 10.40 runs per over, Avesh’s experience remains a significant asset for LSG. The competition for the pace attack will be intense as the team looks to balance raw speed with tactical experience.

A Culture of Talent Scouting

One of LSG’s most consistent successes has been their ability to to uncover raw, untapped talent. From Mayank’s emergence in 2024 and Digvesh Rathi in 2025, to the continued trust placed in Ayush Badoni, the franchise has consistently bet on young players.

This year, the spotlight has shifted to Mukul Choudhary. After a stunning unbeaten 54 off 27 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders, Choudhary has catapulted from obscurity to stardom. His match-winning heroics, including a penultimate-ball six and a scrambled bye to seal a tense victory, have made him an overnight sensation.

Managing the Hype: The Moody Approach

Tom Moody is acutely aware of the dangers that come with sudden fame for young athletes. He believes the environment within LSG is perfectly suited to protect Mukul from the “trap” of media sensationalism.

“Mukul has been very well supported within the franchise,” Moody explained. “He’s an environment that he will be managed in and looked after very carefully. We’re very aware that it can spiral out of control for any young player who has a one-off innings.”

“At the end of the day, he’s a very humble and down-to-earth young man. That’s certainly shining through with regard to his behaviour post that superb innings. He has been very grounded, very measured and has continued to work exceptionally hard,” Moody added.

With Mayank Yadav’s potential return and the rise of Mukul Choudhary, LSG looks to bring their X-factor players into the fold as they strive for playoff contention in the 2026 season.
