Squad Shake-up Ahead of Bangladesh Tour
The New Zealand national cricket team has officially confirmed a roster change ahead of their highly anticipated limited-overs tour of Bangladesh. Left-arm fast bowler Ben Lister has been drafted into the squad, stepping in for allrounder Kristian Clarke. The change was necessitated after Clarke sustained an unfortunate injury during the ongoing New Zealand A tour in Sri Lanka.
The Injury Incident
Kristian Clarke, who has been gaining momentum in the international circuit after recent appearances in India, suffered a split webbing to his right hand. The injury occurred during the second one-day match against Sri Lanka A earlier this week while the allrounder was attempting a catch. Clarke, who has earned three ODI caps and one T20I appearance for New Zealand earlier this year, will now focus on his recovery.
Ben Lister Steps In
Ben Lister, who is already in Sri Lanka as part of the A squad, will make the transition to the main touring party for Bangladesh. Lister brings international experience to the side, boasting three ODI caps and 12 T20I appearances. His most recent national duty came in 2024 during the tour of Pakistan, and he has also spent time in the Test squad environment, notably in Zimbabwe last year. His inclusion provides a vital left-arm bowling option for captain Tom Latham.
Ben Sears and the PSL Conflict
The squad management has also navigated availability issues regarding fast bowler Ben Sears. Sears has been signed as an overseas replacement by Rawalpindiz in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and will be unavailable for the ODI leg of the Bangladesh series. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed that he will not be replaced in the ODI squad but will join the team for the T20I series. It is expected that he will be available from the second T20I onwards, depending on the performance of his PSL franchise.
Key Returning Bowlers and Leadership
Despite the changes, the New Zealand side remains competitive, bolstered by the return of several key pace bowlers who have been sidelined with injuries. Matthew Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Blair Tickner have all been cleared for selection, adding significant depth to the bowling attack. Tom Latham will captain both the ODI and T20I squads, providing steady leadership for the upcoming challenges in subcontinental conditions.
Updated Tour Logistics
The logistical framework for the tour has seen some adjustments. Due to energy-saving initiatives implemented by Bangladesh amid the global fuel crisis, the official match timings for the series have been brought forward. Fans and stakeholders should note that the ODI series is scheduled to kick off in Dhaka on April 17. These changes reflect the broader efforts to ensure the tour proceeds smoothly while respecting local energy conservation measures. The Blackcaps look forward to a competitive series, aiming to leverage their refreshed bowling lineup to adapt quickly to the conditions in Bangladesh.
