Sameer Minhas Dominates as Islamabad United Cruise Past Rawalpindiz in PSL

A Statement Victory in the Battle of the Twin Cities

The build-up to the first-ever meeting between Islamabad United and the newly formed Rawalpindiz was filled with social media banter and talk of a budding regional rivalry. However, as the dust settled at the Gaddafi Stadium, it became clear that while the fans may want a rivalry, Islamabad United is currently operating on a different level. With a commanding seven-wicket win achieved with nearly six overs to spare, United sent a stern message to the rest of the league.

Contrasting Powerplays Set the Tone

The outcome of the match was effectively determined within the first six overs of each innings. Islamabad United, fueled by the explosive form of young opener Sameer Minhas, raced to 62 for 1 during the powerplay. In stark contrast, Rawalpindiz found themselves shackled, managing only 35 for 2 as they struggled to find any momentum against a disciplined United attack.

Minhas, fresh off a scintillating 82 not out against the Quetta Gladiators, continued his purple patch. He turned the 157-run chase into a clinical exercise, dismantling the bowling attack on a surface that offered genuine value for shots. While his opening partner Devon Conway took time to settle, Minhas ensured the required run rate never became an issue.

The Minhas Masterclass

Sameer Minhas’s innings was a blend of calculated aggression and pure talent. The highlight of his 36-ball 70 came in the third over when he dispatched a short-pitched delivery from Mohammad Amir over mid-wicket for a massive six. Out of a 58-run opening stand, Minhas contributed a staggering 47 runs, effectively breaking the back of the chase before he was eventually dismissed at the start of the ninth over.

With the platform set, the middle order had the luxury of playing with freedom. Haider Ali remained unbeaten on 26 off 16 deliveries, while Mark Chapman provided a frantic, match-ending cameo, scoring 24 not out off just 7 balls to seal the game with significant time remaining.

Rawalpindiz Struggle Amidst Bowlers’ Dominance

Earlier, Islamabad skipper Shadab Khan opted to bowl first, hoping to utilize the moisture on the pitch following a 40-minute rain delay. His decision was vindicated early on. Richard Gleeson was a standout, utilizing movement both ways to remove Yasir Khan and Mohammad Rizwan within the first four overs. With Imad Wasim maintaining tight, accurate lines, Rawalpindiz were reeling at 15 for 2 early on.

Kamran Ghulam provided the only real resistance for the batting side, scoring a fighting 50 off 36 balls. His efforts helped stabilize a sinking ship, but the lack of support from the subsequent middle-order batters kept the scoring rate well below what was required to challenge a side like Islamabad.

A Late Flourish and Worrying Trends

The innings received a much-needed injection of energy in the final over, as Dian Forrester, making his PSL debut, took a liking to Salman Irshad’s bowling. Striking two sixes and two fours in the final over, Forrester pushed Rawalpindiz to a total of 156 for 7. While respectable, it proved woefully inadequate against the firepower of the United batting lineup.

The result leaves Rawalpindiz in a precarious position, having lost each of their first three matches. For captain Mohammad Rizwan, the defeat marks a continuation of a troubling statistical trend, as he has now lost 13 of his last 14 matches as a captain in the PSL, a stretch of poor results that dates back to the 2024 final. As the tournament progresses, both teams face diverging paths: Islamabad United looks like a championship contender, while Rawalpindiz must find answers quickly to salvage their campaign.
