In the high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League, results are the only currency that matters. For the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a franchise synonymous with consistency and championship pedigree, the recent dry spell has been uncharacteristic. After failing to reach the playoffs for two consecutive seasons in 2024 and 2025, the pressure on the management reached a boiling point following a winless start to the 2026 campaign.
Head coach Stephen Fleming, the longest-serving tactician in the league, has found himself at the center of this storm. Facing the media ahead of a crucial clash against the Delhi Capitals, Fleming chose not to deflect the scrutiny, instead meeting it with characteristic transparency.
“Criticism is Fair When You Don’t Do Well”
When asked about the backlash from fans and former players regarding the team’s performance, Fleming was blunt. “Results dictate that. That’s fair. Criticism is fair when you don’t do well,” he stated. The coach highlighted that his role extends far beyond the two-month window of the IPL. By managing teams in the SA20 and Major League Cricket, and participating in global auction scouting, Fleming argues he remains deeply entrenched in the evolving nature of T20 cricket.
“It’s not that I just turn off and then come to the IPL without an idea of where the game is going. In fact, it’s the other way,” he added, reinforcing his dedication to the sport.
Learning from the Past: The Pivot to Youth
Both Fleming and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad have been open about the tactical missteps during the 2025 mega-auction. Recognizing that the previous squad composition was not fit for the modern game, the team has undergone a significant shift. The franchise has invested heavily in youthful exuberance, spending INR 28.4 crore on players like Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer during the recent mini-auction.
This shift isn’t just an IPL-centric strategy. Fleming has been actively nurturing young talent across his global coaching portfolio. In Major League Cricket, the Texas Super Kings provided opportunities for local hitters like Saiteja Mukkamalla, while in the SA20, Fleming guided the development of Donnovan Ferreira. These experiences are now being funneled into the CSK rebuilding project.
The Challenge of Integration
Despite the high talent ceiling of the new recruits, Fleming acknowledges the difficulty of integrating fresh faces into a system that demands immediate results. “One of the challenges is the number of players we’ve changed in the squad means there is a little bit of a settling process,” he explained. While other franchises have maintained core groups, CSK is in a phase of transition.
Fleming believes that the squad is not far off from finding its rhythm. He pointed to recent performances, where the team’s batting effort remained competitive despite minor lapses in bowling accuracy under pressure. The goal now is to build confidence and secure that elusive first victory to act as a catalyst for the remainder of the season.
Balancing Fearlessness with Game Awareness
A significant portion of the coaching staff’s work during the recent five-day break was spent at the High-Performance Academy, focusing on bridging the gap between raw potential and tactical maturity. Fleming expressed admiration for the modern generation’s lack of fear, noting, “What I do love is the skill level. It’s incredible to see these guys expand their abilities and the lack of fear of consequence.”
However, he remains a staunch advocate for the fundamentals. The current challenge for the coaching staff is to instill game awareness in these players without suppressing their aggressive instincts. “The game has changed, but there are still coaching elements around the game that need to be respected,” Fleming observed. “That’s the battle as we go forward: what is the balance between being too reckless and then being sensible?”
As CSK prepares for the road ahead, the message from the dugout is clear: there is no easy way out of a slump. Through hard work, patience, and a firm belief in their new, youthful core, Fleming is convinced that the Yellow Army will find its way back to the top. For now, the focus is strictly on the next ball, the next match, and proving that the tactical pivot was the right path to take.
