Warwickshire Women’s Record Score Thwarted by Rain in Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Warwickshire’s Batting Masterclass Ends in Frustration

In a match that promised to be a high-scoring thriller, Warwickshire women’s cricket team delivered a textbook batting performance at Edgbaston, only to be denied by the English weather. After piling up a massive 354 for seven in their 50 overs, the game ended in a ‘no result’ as rain arrived during the interval and intensified, washing out the contest entirely.

A Record-Breaking Opening Stand

After being put in to bat by Hampshire captain Georgia Adams, Warwickshire started their innings with intent. The opening pair, Davina Perrin and Amu Surenkumar, set a powerful tone from the outset, putting together a 147-run partnership in just 22 overs.

Perrin was particularly aggressive, hitting successive sixes over mid-wicket off Bex Tyson to propel the Bears to 50 in the 11th over. She eventually reached her half-century from 55 balls, while Surenkumar followed suit with a score of 51 from 63 deliveries. The partnership ended when Surenkumar skied a delivery from Tyson to mid-wicket, and Perrin was dismissed eight balls later, caught by deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Daisy Gibb.

Middle-Order Stability and Acceleration

The loss of the openers did not derail Warwickshire’s momentum. Instead, the third-wicket partnership between Meg Austin and Katie George proved to be a fluent and devastating partnership. The duo added 101 runs in a rapid 14 overs, maintaining the serene progress of the innings.

Meg Austin, continuing her strong form from last season’s Blast, notched another half-century (51 off 43), before being caught at point off the bowling of Amanda-Jade Wellington. Katie George followed shortly after, reaching her fifty in just 46 balls (56 off 51) before leading-edging a return catch to Megan Sturge.

Pavely’s Late Surge

The final flourish came from Charis Pavely, who provided the perfect late impetus to push the total even higher. With her clinical approach, Pavely reached a 28-ball half-century, finishing on 63 not out from 38 balls, scooping successive fours over the wicketkeeper’s head off Naomi Dattani.

A Game Cut Short

Despite the total, Hampshire were certainly not out of the game. Given their recent thrilling run-chase against Essex at Southampton, they had the confidence to tackle a testing target on a good pitch. However, the spectators and fans were fans of a fascinating contest that denied them the chance to see Hampshire’s chase.

Warwickshire also missed out on the chance to capitalise on their record-breaking score. Additionally, Alexa Stonehouse, making her Warwickshire debut on loan from Surrey, was denied the chance to get the ball in her hand. It was a truly frustrating conclusion to a match that had they have been the dominant force on the side with the batting side.

  • Warwickshire: 354 for 7 (Perrin 81, Pavely 63*, George 56, Surenkumar 51, Austin 51)
  • Hampshire: No result due to rain
